Omnex conducts Disciplined Problem Solving in a number of methodologies including 8D, Root Cause Analysis and 5 Why. Omnex principals help write a methodology for problem solving called "EPS or Effective Problem Solving" for AIAG. Our experience in problem solving goes back 30 years. We have helped a number of organizations implement and maintain a culture of problem solving.

8D Problem Solving or the Eight Disciplines -Problem solving follows a 8 Step disciplined process or the 8D process. This process includes forming a cross-functional team, describing the problem following the 5W2H method or the IS/IS Not method; Containment of the problem, Root Causes – Escape, Occur, and System; Identifying Corrective Action, Implementing Corrective Action, System Corrective Action and Congratulating the team.

The EPS or Effective Problem Solving is very similar to the 8D process, identifying the failure mode of the problem up front and the FMEA lessons learned to help in the problem analysis and problem solving.

Both methods use IS/IS Not, 5 Why, Cause and Effect Diagrams and the Seven Statistical Tools as shown below:

Problem Solving and Statistical Tools

Training in problem solving is effective but not sustainable. Omnex recommends training for top management, Facilitator competency and coaching, Company-wide training, E-learning, and Problem Solving Software as a part of the solution to develop a problem solving culture within the organization.

In the Aerospace industry, we have the RCA or Root Cause Analysis method which is included in the AS 13000 Standard titled – 'Problem Solving Requirements for Suppliers', developed by the G-22 Aerospace Engine Supplier Quality (AESQ) Technical Committee. The G-22 Committee was formed to develop, specify, maintain, and promote the adoption of quality standards specific to the aerospace engine supply chain. The objective is to reduce OEM-specific requirements through a focused set of standards that integrate industry best practices and elements unique aerospace engine suppliers.
