Implications of Food Safety Management Systems including GFSI, SQF, FSSC 22000,
HACCP and Prerequisite Programs
High-profile food safety scares in the marketplace have pushed the food industry
towards improvement. Change is hitting the entire industry at an unprecedented level.
The major food manufacturers and distributors, as well as the largest retailers
in the world such as Wal-Mart, Tesco, Delhaize, Ahold, Migros, Metro, and Carrefour,
have agreed to adopt Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) standards. Wal-Mart and
Sams Club Select, the largest U.S. grocery chain, is leading the way by becoming
the first to adopt GFSI standards.
It is clear that organizations that do not adopt these standards will lose out in
the marketplace. Organizations such as Dean Foods and others have adopted SQF for
themselves and their suppliers. In the opinion of many, the entire food industry
will require SQF certification within the next five years.
In the US, the food industry has adopted a wide variety of standards including
ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems Requirements and ISO 22000 Food Management Systems
Requirements. More recently, an ISO 22000-based FSSC 22000 has become Conditionally
Approved by the GFSI. For many suppliers, this can present a significant challenge
as they are not sure how GFSI, FSCC 22000 and SQF relate to their business. These
new changes and challenges impact your organization and your Top Managements decision
making. Food companies need to have a clear strategy for themselves. You or your
organizations key decision makers are encouraged to join us to discuss this and
other key strategies food companies are embracing today.
Omnex recommends that organizations adopt either SQF or a combination of SQF/ISO
