Environmental Management (ISO 14001)
Implementing the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System standard is the first
step towards sound EMS practices. The management system that is implemented helps
install a basic framework for Environmental Performance.
Omnex has implemented thousands of Environmental Management Systems worldwide. In
most of these instances, the implementations used some form of an integrated management
system. Click here for more information on Integrated Management
Systems. There is also an article titled Juggling Multiple Standards that may be of interest
to you.
Customer demand is what is driving organizations worldwide to adopt and implement
Environmental Management Systems. Large organizations in different industries such
as GE, Toyota and Nestle are driving EMS implementations internally and many cases
with their supply base.
In an interesting side bar, the Electronic Industry has done even more by adopting
the EICC standards for Social Responsibility and the triple bottom - line of Environment,
Health and Safety, and Social Responsibilities standards for their supply base.
Omnex has helped the Electronic Industry in implementing EICC standards using an
Integrated Management System.

Training and Workshops
Omnex offers training and workshops in ISO 14001 in
ISO 14001(Environmental Management Systems) and
ISO 50001(Energy Management Systems) and
ISO 26000(Guidance on Social Responsibility) Furthermore, these
classes include workshops on Carbon Foot Prints and the Global Reporting Initiative.
ISO 50001 closely mirrors the ISO 14001 standard to a large extent and will easily
integrate with ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.

Environment Management, Energy Management, Sustainability and Social Responsibility
Implementing Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001) is the first step to implementing
Sustainability and Social Responsibility. Omnex has been implementing ISO 14001
since 2005 with an integrated ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 implementation at Yazaki in
North America. In 2005, Omnex published a paper regarding integration Juggling Multiple Standards which discusses the integration
of the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards and made the argument that over 95% of ISO
9001 and ISO 14001 integrates. In 2010, the concept of integration was taken to
the next level when Omnex integrated ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and Food
Safety Management Systems for Nestle. Over the past six years, Omnex has helped
implement Environmental Management Systems in thousands of organizations worldwide.

The second step towards becoming a more environmentally-responsible organization
is to move from the pollution prevention charter of ISO 14001 in the Environmental
Policy and introduce Carbon Foot Print and/or water usage and/or waste to the scope
of the organizations Environmental Management System. This change in policy will
enhance the risk assessment and objectives, and plan for the organization, all of
which are requirements of ISO 14001. A good standard to adopt in the second step
includes ISO 50001, which is an Energy Management System or EnMS Standard. This
standard, which is becoming popular world-wide, will focus the organization to help
both bottom - line costs and the environment.
The third step is to integrate ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 26000 with the GRI Sustainability
Reporting Guidelines. Earlier this year, Omnex published a paper at the
ASQ Pathways to Social Responsibility Conference that discussed integrating
ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 26000. Integrating the business processes of the organization
and including process controls for Sustainability and Social Responsibility is both
the most efficient and best method for implementation.
Another option to the step-wise implementation of Environmental, Energy and Sustainability
standards is to implement ISO 14001, ISO 50001, ISO 26000 and GRI together into
one management system as a single step without implementing standards one at a time
as suggested earlier. In fact, Omnex specializes in this approach since it saves
time, effort and money. Contact us so we can help you understand this time savings
and cost savings approach to implementation.
Integrated Management Systems
Integrated Management Systems (IMS) as it relates to Environmental and Sustainability
is the integration of QMS, EMS, with ISO 26000 Social Responsibility, ISO 50001
Energy Management Systems, and including reporting on Social Responsibility using
the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) into a single management system. IMS fosters
the approach that an organization should establish one integrated system that is
best for the business and not set up separate, often duplicate, processes or documentation
to satisfy each management standard. IMS contains company-wide processes that conform
to EMS, EnMS, Social Responsibility and GRI but most importantly they are designed
and established in support of the business goals.
At Omnex, integration means developing common organizational processes based on
standardized work flows, conducting integrated risk analysis (using FMEAs and Control
Plans for Quality, Environmental, Energy and Social risks) and conducting integrated
audits. At Omnex, we are continuing to pioneer ever more effective and efficient
ways of defining, implementing and auditing integrated management systems.
Integration and standardization not only reduce confusion and redundancy in the
workplace, but cost an estimated 50% less to implement and most importantly cost
50% less to maintain. Furthermore, the cost for registration is reduced by as much
as 33%.
Omnex has been implementing integrated management systems since the 1990s, beginning
with the integration of QS-9000 and ISO 14001 in the Americas for Yazaki. Since
then, we have integrated ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 for organizations around
the world including General Motors and TRW. Lately, we have integrated ISO 9001
and Food Safety Management Systems including an implementation where Food Safety,
Quality (ISO 9001), Environmental (ISO 14001), and Health and Safety (ISO 45001)
were integrated into one management system. Omnex recently helped Swiss Colony a
100 year-old Food Catalog and Bakery implement FSMS and QMS standards in a record
six months that included QOS/BOS and Stage Gate New Product Development methodologies
and 8D Problem Solving techniques.
Omnex provides training for top management in the understanding and integration
of multiple integrated management systems, as well as the worlds only lead auditor
course in Integrated Management Systems (ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001).
We believe that ISO 14001, ISO 50001, ISO 26000 and GRI can all be integrated together
into one management system and can be implemented as one step without implementing
standards one at a time as suggested earlier. In fact, Omnex specializes in this
since it saves time and effort.

Implementation Support

Omnex can help you conduct a Discovery Analysis (or Assessment) or conduct a Best-In-Class
assessment of the Environmental, Energy Management, Sustainability and/or
Social Responsibility management systems to assist your company in making process
improvements that result in efficiency and savings. These systems can be assessed
either individually or all at the same time.
Omnex will study your current processes to see the gaps in the systems as well as
review Best-In-Class practices depending on the scope of the assessment. Omnex assessments
always focus on savings and improvements within the organization. The last day of
the assessment centers around feedback and planning with the customer team. An implementation
plan, team, and next steps are completed as a part of the Discovery. Of course,
this can also be conducted at the beginning of an implementation, when the standard
is revised or when the customer is ready for an overhaul of their systems.
Not only can we help you develop an implementation plan for 14001, we can also provide
facilitation and workshops to help you implement. We can also of course help your
organization implement ISO 14001(EMS), ISO 50001(EnMS), ISO 26000(SMS) and GRI reporting.
Omnexs core strengths are spelled out in the 12 methodologies in which
we specialize.
